Here's more detail
Description
New Citizens’ Gateway (NCG) provide a variety of activities for refugees and asylum seekers aged 12+. Young refugees and asylum seekers and in particular unaccompanied minors may have experienced poverty, disadvantage, and abuse in their home countries. Upon arriving in the UK, they may be faced with further disadvantage associated with linguistic and cultural barriers, social isolation, and ongoing deprivation. Some of the young people may be here alone and in care; others are living with an elder sibling or relatives.
The Youth Well-being Project is designed to support the well-being of refugees and asylum-seeking young people, with an emphasis on those who may have experienced trauma, abuse, and neglect.
The aim of this project is to improve young people’s overall health and well-being by providing opportunities for support, socialisation, confidence building and integration into the local community. These youth activities aim to develop the voice of young people, and work to build their confidence and sense of place in society; enabling them to reach their full potential.
Activities
- What activities do NCG offer?
Weekly Youth Club
Our Youth Club is led by the youth team and volunteers, and often involves guest hosts and facilitators in the creative arts and sports industries. Previous activities have included circus skills, art and drama sessions, film screenings, and sports and exercise classes. This is a great space for young people to meet others regularly and socialise, whilst trying out new skills and activities. This is a mixed group (any gender, aged 12-21 years old) which meets every Thursday evening at Middlesex University.
Weekly Football Club
The Youth Team facilitate a weekly football club with a trained coach to provide support and guidance to the young people, whilst ending the week having fun, exercising, and socialising with other young people. This group currently meets every Friday evening at Middlesex University.
Youth ESOL Online Class
The experienced Youth ESOL teachers facilitate two interactive online classes on a weekly basis, for beginner (entry level/entry level 1) and advanced (level 2+) students.
Youth Counselling
NCG offer counselling for young people aged 13 – 18. These are 12 free individual sessions, accessed online. We have bi lingual counsellors in a variety of languages, and can provide translators for other languages. Please note there is a waiting list for this service.
Girls Club
The Girl’s Club is a female and female presenting group who meet and participate in outings and activities based upon the interests of the group.
Youth Outings and School Holiday Activities
The Youth Team facilitate outings and activities in the evenings, weekends and school holidays to galleries, museums, and activity centres in the London area.
Youth Volunteering
The NCG have semi regular volunteering opportunities for our young people aged 15 – 19. Their primary work here has been providing fun activities for young asylum seeking children living in hotels. Their volunteers can give back to their community while building their skills and improving employability.
