Description

Boredom is a common feeling experienced by many people, especially when there’s a lull in activities or a lack of immediate stimulation. It’s important to understand that boredom is a natural emotion and can even have some positive aspects. For example, boredom can encourage creativity, self-reflection and the opportunity to discover new interests and hobbies. However, excessive and chronic boredom can also lead to feelings of frustration, restlessness and even risky behaviours if not managed effectively.

When you find yourself bored, consider it an opportunity to explore new activities or revisit old interests. Try picking up a book you’ve been meaning to read, experimenting with a new hobby or learning a new skill. Boredom can also be a great time for self-reflection and setting personal goals. Talk to friends and family about your feelings of boredom, as they may have suggestions or be willing to join you in trying something new.

Although boredom can be a motivator for self-awareness and self-improvement, experiencing ongoing boredom can also have a negative impact on our wellbeing, productivity, and mental and physical health. Research has shown that boredom can contribute to self-harm, substance use, drinking, anxiety, depression and a range of other mental health problems.
