Service Information

SEMH is the front door to all services offered by Islington CAMHS and our partner agencies. We screen all referrals to make sure we find each young person the right service first time.

SEMH offers social, emotional and mental health services to children, young people and their families, up to their 18th birthday (or 25th birthday for young people with special educational needs), who are registered with an Islington GP.

Some services also support those who live in Islington and/or are educated in Islington. We see children, young people and families in schools and in the community (including their homes).

  • What will being seen involve?

Our services are local and include:

    • Counselling and therapeutic services

    • Supports to help you get involved with activities for young people
    • Substance misuse support
    • Assessment and diagnostic service for neurodevelopmental difference
    • Links with social care
  • Who will children, young people and their families work with?

The SEMH team is a multi-agency, multidisciplinary team working in Islington. Our integrated team includes both health and social care clinicians.

Our multiagency team is made of up of staff from Islington Community CAMHS, Barnardo’s, YCSMAS – Youth Counselling, Brandon Centre and Isledon Wellbeing. We also work closely with colleagues from Islington Children’s Social Care and Early Help.

SEMH provide support to children, young people and their families / carers who may be experiencing social, emotional or mental health and wellbeing difficulties.

When we receive a referral, our SEMH clinician may contact the young person / parent / carer / referrer to discuss the referral, request questionnaires to be completed or offer an Enhanced Enquiry appointment. Our aim is to offer advice and/or a service in the most appropriate and efficient way. Your referral may be passed onto one of our partner agencies for an assessment/intervention. The waiting time for each service varies.

All referrals are received at our central point of access and screened for safeguarding in the first instance by the Children’s Social Care Team in Islington. They will then pass your referral on to the SEMH team.

Our larger team consists of psychotherapists, psychologists, child and family therapists, mental health nurses, outreach team and south hub as well as children’s social care clinicians.

Supports are available in clinic, in the community, at school and at home.

  • Referral information

Prior to make a referral, please read our threshold document which has information about eligibility and what to include when making a referral, including a sleep diary. For a more detailed overview of agencies and the services they provide, please consult the network matrix.

We accept referrals from allied health professionals, GPs, schools or self-referral. All referrals should be sent via the Central Point of Access using the Request for Service Form.

When making a referral for a neurodevelopmental assessment (ADHD, Autism), Islington CAMHS requires a completed school proforma to be attached with the referral form. If the proforma is incomplete, the referral will be rejected and the referrer asked to re-refer with it included.
